FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE William A. Grear National Youth Advocate Program 700 W. Hillsboro Blvd. Building 3, Suite 101 Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 954-596-5284 [email protected] nyap.org Knights of Pythias sponsors a day at the Ball Park for local Foster Children Tamarac, FL – July 30, 2013 – We have all seen in recent news that there are many children in foster care who have been removed from their parents due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. It is the goal of organizations like National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) to recruit, train and support more and more folks in Broward and Palm Beach counties to become foster parents for these children in need. It is also the hope of NYAP and other child welfare agencies in Broward and Palm Beach counties that while children are in foster care they live as normal a life as possible. A child in foster care should have the same opportunities to experience the “fun” things in life, just as those of you who are reading this were able to growing up. Unfortunately, often time children in foster care do not have the “normalcy” in their lives that children not in foster care enjoy. Whether it’s because of multiple moves to multiple foster homes, having to change schools, or other systemic or bureaucratic issues, some children in foster care aren’t exposed to the extracurricular activities that every child should enjoy. There has been a recent push by The Department of Children and Families to ensure children in foster care enjoy a more normal life experience during their stay in the foster care system. With that in mind, it was with great pleasure that NYAP partnered with the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal order dedicated to the cause of universal peace, to sponsor a Day at the Ball Park for children in foster care. On Sunday, July 28th ten foster children in NYAP’s program and their foster parents met with the gentlemen of the Knights of Pythias and the Pythians provided “goodie bags” for the kids to enjoy, as well as breakfast, game tickets (great seats by the way!) and parking passes for the kids and foster parents. It was then off to Marlins Park to watch the Miami Marlins play the Pittsburgh Pirates! There was cotton candy, hot dogs, popcorn, Sponge Bob and, oh yeah baseball! The kids had a great day, NYAP was even able to speak with a representative from Nickelodeon and get Sponge Bob to come meet the group of kids up close for a photo op! The smiles on the children’s faces were priceless and perhaps for those few hours the kids forgot about their situation, the losses they’ve experienced and the trauma they’ve endured and were able to feel “normal” and enjoy a great day! Special thanks to the local chapter of Knights of Pythias. If you or anyone you know have interest in learning more about becoming a foster parent, please attend NYAP’s orientation on Monday, August 5th at 6:00pm at 700 W. Hillsboro Blvd., Bldg. 3, Suite 101 Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. Please contact us at 954-596-5284 or email us at [email protected] We need more foster parents and we will always need more! The need for more nurturing foster parents is never-ending. The time to get involved in now!
