This year, I would like to nominate BRENDA LAUTAOJA and here is a write up as to her ongoing efforts to make Kirkland Lake a better place for all. We often don’t think of animals..dogs/cats as people of Kirkland Lake, but one thing is for sure, Brenda does! Their cry for help may not be heard, or their need for a home might not be spoken, but Brenda is the VOICE to help these Pet People! Brenda has volunteered for a number of years at the Encore Club in KL before channelling all of her efforts to Animal Rescue since 2011. She has worked with many rescue groups throughout Ontario to help animals everywhere, but Brenda’s main concern was the number of animals that were homeless and lost here in Kirkland Lake. She has worked very closely with the Kirkland Lake Animal Control which she has pulled many dogs from the pound, fostered them in her own home, raised money for their vet care and have found them wonderful homes. Brenda is known to Follow Up on each and every one of them to ensure that the home she has found for them is an Excellent Fit. Since Brenda started working with the pound here in Kirkland Lake, not one dog has been euthanised. Every impounded dog has been returned to it’s owner or been adopted by a new family. Brenda has also made a Facebook Page for Lost and Found Dogs in Kirkland Lake. This social media page has been very helpful in finding the owners of lost dogs in Kirkland Lake and surrounding areas. In addition, Brenda has saved many dogs and litters of puppies from Kirkland Lake and surrounding Areas. Brenda is also the Northern Representative for All Heart Pet Rescue to which Brenda often brings her Kirkland Lake donations for dogs in need. Many of the Kirkland Lake dogs have been referred to All Hear Rescue which many of these dogs have been cared for, rehabilitated and re-homed. Furthermore, Brenda is constantly raising money and donations to help pay for vetting and care for homeless animals. Brenda is very thrifty and will collect anything that she can turn into cash, such as; Canadian Tire Money, Beer and Liquor empties, Pop Cans, Pennies and Participating in Fund-raisers and Walkathons.....not to mention donating every cent she can afford. There are often times, Brenda will transport animals to different shelters, vet appointments and All Heart Rescue outside of North Bay. She also delivers all donations collected to where they have to go at her own expense. Brenda is constantly being called(day and night) upon to provide information and advice for pet owners and is always a wealth of knowledge..I myself, have called Brenda on a couple of occasions. She is always happy to help or provide some advice and if need be, her home to foster. Brenda is constantly patrolling the streets in –40 temperatures, late at night to ensure that animals are safe from our harsh winters. Again, I have met and helped Brenda with this - last winter, a four day/night trying to capture a dog in -40 temp...Brenda did get him safely, and I believe, as well as others, the dog was very happy to be saved! In addition, she has live trapped several dogs that were lost and freezing and re-homed them to wonderful families, or brought to a safe place for further assessment. If a dog is lost....Brenda is on it! She is posting pictures, sharing information and looking for the animal. Thank goodness Kirkland Lake has our own Dog Whisperer/Rosa Brown because I believe, Kirkland Lake and Area has improved greatly with her involvement. I know that the Kirkland Lake pound will attest to this as well as others in Kirkland Lake. Thank you for taking the time to read this and it is hoped that this year’s chosen Citizen will be Brenda Lautaoja - The Voice For Helpless Animals!
