FORT BENNING, Ga. – Fort Benning will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at 11 a.m. Sept. 26 at the Benning Conference Center. The Commandant of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, Col. Glenn R. Huber Jr. will address this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Guiding our Destiny with Heritage and Traditions.” Col. Huber was born in Madrid and is a native of Lititz, Pa. He is a graduate of the University of Texas and also earned a Masters degree in Management from Florida Institute of Technology. His military education includes Chemical Officer Basic and Ordnance Advanced Courses, Logistics Executive Development Course and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Huber recently returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as Chief of Staff to the Iraq Security Assistance Mission, United States Forces – Iraq. His other significant assignments include Joint Logistics Officer, U.S. Military Group – Colombia, U.S. Army attaché to the Republic of Chile, U.S. Defense and Army attaché to the Dominican Republic and interim Defense attaché to Nicaragua. The histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic-American Soldiers and citizens are celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins on Sept. 15, also a significantdate as the anniversary of independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico declared its independence on Sept. 16 and Chile’s Independence Day is Sept. 18. Hispanic Heritage week was first observed in 1968 and was expanded to a month under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
