FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. What is a tabletop roleplaying game? A tabletop roleplaying game is a form of interactive and collaborative storytelling in which players assume roles of protaganists (characters) and play out a story together with the assistance of a game-master, whose role is to help establish the environment, events and other characters that the players may encounter throughout the course of the story. Player and game master actions are also influenced by a rules system that helps determine whether or not players succeed at given tasks. In addition, most tabletop roleplaying games help track a character’s progress in the form of a character sheet, allowing him or her to develop their stories over the course of multiple smaller games. Tabletop roleplaying involves creativity, imagination, a certain degree of strategy and a fair amount of lateral thinking. While it is a game, there are no winners and losers. • Players get the satisfaction of succeeding in the adventure and seeing their characters advance. • For Game Masters, the satisfaction is in entertaining a group of your friends and the challenge of running the imaginary world that they are interacting with in a believable and fun way. 2. What is Pathfinder Society Organized Play? Pathfinder is one the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying system. Pathfinder Organized Play is a global program run by Paizo (paizo), the publisher of the Pathfinder game system. It is intended to support the community and create a fair and consistent environment in which its games can be played. As part of Organized Play, Pathfinder Society Game Masters run adventure scenarios, or stories, which have been developed by Paizo. Upon successful completion/victory of a scenario, rewards are tracked centrally and applied to your player record, allowing Organized Play members to play any scenario, with any GM, and see their character continue to grow and develop. 3. Who is Pathfinder Society Organized Play suitable for? Pathfinder Society Organized Play is suitable for players aged 10+ and will feature games designed exclusively for both groups, as well as programs open for all ages. 4. What kind of rewards and prizes will be available? In addition to exclusive in game bonuses, books, games and other surprises will be available throughout the con. Details (and hints!) will be released on our Facebook page closer to the event! 5. I’m a parent. What are the benefits of roleplaying for my child? Roleplaying has a number of benefits for children across a variety of different vectors: - Social skills: roleplaying is a fundamentally social activity, reinforcing and helping to develop good social skills such as persuasion, negotiation, teamwork, leadership and personal confidence. - Verbal skills: as a game that relies on accurate communication, roleplaying expands vocabulary and relies on effective communication. - Basic math: most roleplaying rules systems require an understanding of addition and subtraction (to calculate bonuses/penalties) and a sense of probability (as dice are used to add an element of randomness to the game). - Creativity: the rewards of the game are fundamentally tied to story that the group collaboratively creates, with most of the action taking place purely in the collective imagination of the players. In addition, players often start “acting their parts” – acting and speaking like their characters just as actors in a theatre performance would. As there’s no script, the story also emerges on the fly, requiring them to improvise their lines on the fly. 6. I’m a parent. What exactly will happen in SmiteCon? Children attending SmiteCon will be invited to participate in sessions designed particularly for young people new to the hobby, and tied to mature, experienced Game Masters. To ensure the best possible experience, students will be grouped in dedicated sessions with children close to their own age, and with their game run by an experienced Game Master and supported by volunteers. Parents are welcome to join these sessions either as observers, or even play the game with their child! Ahead of these sessions, attendees unfamiliar with the rules system will be taught the basics and be given a rules primer that they can use as a reference for their first few games. In addition, our Game Masters will also help support players with guidance, answer any questions that they have and ensure they have fun. This is not intended to be a limit but rather an option. More experienced children are welcome to register mixed audience games with our other society members as well. To view the “kid-friendly” sessions, please see the Schedule above and look for the “Kid Friendly” label. The program is designed to be student friendly and has been created under the leadership of two AIS educators. For any questions on the program or specific scenarios scheduled, please contact us!
