FRIDAY, 10/31/14 POETRY. Psalm 1:1-2 “The Second Secret!” (By Barry) WORSHIP: Can you hear the overwhelming passion in this song? Do you long to have that same passion for Jesus? https://youtube/watch?v=y0P3fNPT7XQ SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&c=1&t=NLT Passion. We often say we are passionate about things, or ideas, or people. We might say, for instance, that we are passionate about movies, or chocolate, or a certain sports team. We might also say that we are passionate about a certain person. When we say that, what do we mean? I would like to suggest one single word. DELIGHT. There are times in our lives when we come across something-or someone-that just delights us. They overwhelm us. So much so, that we have to make a conscious decision to focus on the other parts of our lives, because we are so caught up in the thing that delights us. Something that delights us can be a great thing, or an evil thing. It can be a famous thing, or something that nobody else has even noticed. Check out today’s passage with me, and let’s focus on the second verse: 1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Can you see the second secret of joy? It’s called delight. We are told in the Psalm that the joyful person DELIGHTS “in the law of the Lord.” And that person meditates on it “day and night.” Can you see it? The secret of joy is NOT about following rules, or living a moral life, or staying out of trouble. A joyful life doesn’t; come simply from choosing not to cuss or cheat or lie. This second secret to joy is falling so in love with Jesus that all your care about is HIM. He becomes your DELIGHT, and you think about HIM and His WORDS all the time. You just can’t help yourself. THAT is when real joy takes over! THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. Is it hard for you to delight in God? Why or why not? —2. If someone is so crazy about God that He is truly the most important person in their lives, would you be able to tell? How? —3. What are some things in your life that you are passionate about? A person, or a hobby, or a food, or a sport, or a dream? Which of these things sometimes compete with your passion for Jesus? Why? —4. How is this “second secret” related to the “first secret” (in verse 1) that we discussed last week? In other words, how do these two “secrets” combine to produce joy in someone’s life? —5. For those of you reading this that are part of the youth group at Northwest Hills, why do you think we have decided to call our groups “Passion Teams”? PRAYER: A. Ask C. Confess. T. Thank. S. Seek
