FRIDAY, 12/5/14 POETRY. Psalm 3 “An Honest Prayer” (By Barry) WORSHIP: “I Will Look Up!” https://youtube/watch?v=tEQnoE7SnZw SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&c=3&t=NLT My name is King David. I am a leader, and a man of passion. I am a poet and a musician, as well as a ferocious warrior, and successful military leader. I have been a lonely teenaged shepherd, and I have been a celebrity. I have been used by God many, many times to save the people of Israel. But now, those same people-and even my very own son-are after me. I cried out to my God, and I recorded my prayer. In fact, it became a song. Here’s how it goes: 1 O LORD, I have so many enemies; so many are against me. 2 So many are saying, “God will never rescue him!” 3 But you, O LORD, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. 4 I cried out to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy mountain. 5 I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the LORD was watching over me. 6 I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side. 7 Arise, O LORD! Rescue me, my God! Slap all my enemies in the face! Shatter the teeth of the wicked! 8 Victory comes from you, O LORD. May you bless your people. THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. Can you sense David’s desperation? Have you ever had similar feelings? —2. One of the most important things about prayer is honesty. God knows what is in your heart, so you might as well let it out. Can you see the honesty in David’s prayer? Is honesty usually an ingredient in YOUR prayers? —3. David had lived quite a life. He had experienced amazing victories, and heart-breaking defeats. He had been the greatest hero in Israel. Yet, he also slept with another man’s wife, and murdered that man to try to cover things up. He was a man of incredible wisdom. Unfortunately, he also made huge mistakes, and was sometimes a terrible father and husband. But through all of that, David had discovered that he could trust someone. In fact, David had found that there was only one he could trust. It has been a hard road to get there, but can you see that trust in Psalm 3? —4. What stands out most to you about David’s prayer? —5. If you were crying out to God about your enemies, where would you start? What would that look like? PRAYER: Can you see our acronym of A.C.T.S. in David’s prayer today? How can you use today’s Psalm as a model for REAL praying?
