FRIDAY 6th JUNE 1997: Doh! A big day means lots of diary - TopicsExpress

FRIDAY 6th JUNE 1997: Doh! A big day means lots of diary writing! My morning was leisurely, playing Alison Moyet, Tina Turner and Saint Etienne before getting ready. I decided to go to the city semi-freak style. Now that Ive made new freak friends, Ive got to look my freaky best at *ALL* times - even in the pigeon-orientated city centre! I walked up in my blue shiny velvets and blue front-stitched shirt. I bought Primal Screams Jailbird single at HMV and went to meet Jaime. We went to Bletchley. In Red Cross, Jaime found me a Lincoln shirt and it is just to die for! Pale blue and woargh! It is F.A.B. fab! It was part of a suit though. I managed to persuade the old lady to sell the shirt to me separately. (It was £7.50 for the suit). I said Id give her a fiver for it but she was defiant for it to be £3.50. So I put a pound in their Red Cross box. I didnt find anything else but I found Jaime a brown stripe shirt and she found some deep blue jeans. We went into Jivers but didnt find anything in there. The guy was sellotaping his outdoor sign, as someone had backed into it! He mumbled on at us about nothing in particular whilst we looked at CDs. We ended up having a NOW conversation and hes gonna see if theyve got any of the ones I want at Fish Music. Hooray! We then went up the city. Of course, we went into Disney. We looked in Shotgun too but I found no retro shirts. We saw Ramus at Superdrug and chatted with her. Mainly about some Channel 5 cook called Nancy Lam... And food fights at gigs. Once home, I caught the end of TOTP with those annoying American kids Hanson on it. Alex had rung whilst I was out. He wanted to go out and Ill never say no. It was a choice out of what could possibly be on at the Roadmender, and some bands at The Palace, Dunstable. He said hed ring back once hed spoken to Katherine. I got Mum to sew the new buttons Id bought in John Lewis on to my Lincoln top. Roargh! When Alex got back to me, he had some shocking news. All the Roadmender indie nights have been cancelled!! Noooooo! Whats happening to the indie nights in this world! I cant get over it! Anyway, this meant that we went to see the bands at The Palace. We drove in a storm on the way up but I thought it was quite nice! Katherine was scared when we got to the club as there seemed to be quite a few pigeons around. However, once inside we saw plenty of freaks. Shake were playing when we arrived and they were really good. Then came the pigeon indie choons to fill the gap. Then came Choke and we went to the floor to watch them (except Alex, whod disappeared with some PR girl he knew). Lead singer was a cross between Gary Numan and Morrissey. He was quite scary with his eyeliner and tongue antics. The bassist had a cool liquid shirt on, with a big curly mid-fro and eyeliner too. They were cool. They sounded like a harsh melodic Gene. Then came Leisure. There were 50 in the band (or something), the lead singer looked like Damon, the keyboardist looked dead familiar and kept glancing every now and then. They threw out lollies and started passing around a bottle of vodka. Jaime and Katherine were having none of it and left the floor. I decided to stay but soon realised that they were pants. I found Alex with that freak handbag girl near the bar. Id seen her and her freak mates (including the semi-nice Crispin Hunt one) near us on the floor earlier. We talked about the venue and how its like those cheesy eighties videos where the band perform on stage, whilst onlookers sit at their tables with their champagne glasses. And some bloke pulls out rabbits from a hat. We also commented on how there were lots of *old* people there. The freak girl and chums decided to go after me and Alex had been to the loo (and on the way back had three drunken dolly birds throw themselves at me, saying: Youre a babe! - how *SAD!*) They had some mega snog, so I had to just stand there and look at the ceiling and floor. Seahorses came on and me and Alex foung J&K on the dancefloor - knowing theyd be there. The music was sooo weird though. The songs didnt connect in any order. Placebo, Cypress Hill, Blur, House Of Pain, Specials, Beat, Charlatans. Moo! There was far too much grunge n hoochie choons for our liking. The freaks ended up staying longer and Crispin smiled half at me when I smiled whilst looking around the floor. He danced near me for a couple of songs, so it looks like Ive got more freak friends coming my way. Woo-hoo! We left and had a laugh in the car about how wed torture pigeons to convert them into freaks, by subjecting them to continuous indie music and make them labour by making flares. We reckon a good indie scene may well start at Wednesdays now, as the Roadmender DJs were there on Wednesday *and* stayed behind afterwards. So, as theyve lost their job at Roadmender, we reckon theyre trying to get a residence down here. Woo-hoo! Thatd be great! Freaktastic. Wed get Northampton people coming down here!! Roargh!! When I got in, I played Rush Rush (as Ive fallen in love with it again), This House, Wishing You Were Here and some of the Behaviour album. Im so happy with my social life right now. Its just gone haywire!! However, its draining my money. I give God thanks though as its what I prayed for. Not the money side. youtu.be/DnvFOaBoieE
