FRIDAY, November 1 All Saints’ Day Hebrews 12:1.* Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight… A fun game of high school hockey in Minnesota had gone terribly wrong. Jack, a fifteen-year-old, lay motionless on the ice. A check from a player on the opposing team had driven him headfirst into the boards, breaking his spinal column. Jack is not expected to walk or skate again, although he continues to train his body in hopes that his odds will improve. Yet he is not the only one injured that day. Three days after the accident, the player who checked Jack went to the hospital to ask for forgiveness, apologizing for the unintentional consequences of his action. “Yeah, dude, don’t worry,” Jack quickly responded. “It’s hockey—I know it was a fluke, and I know you weren’t doing it intentionally. This is hard for you, too.” Forgiveness: offered without pause or condition from a boy who will most likely never drive or walk or eat without help. May we, too, with God’s grace, forgive those who cause us harm. May we, too, rise up with Jack in the communion of unlikely saints—because in God’s eyes, Jack is indeed standing tall.
