FROM THE DESK OF SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT NANETTE PAULEY: Students returning to school this year will be greeted by a few new faces. Marcellus Community Schools welcomes three new members to our team. At the elementary school, Ashley Loomis was hired to teach 5th and 6th grade math. Ms. Loomis is a graduate of Western Michigan University and has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Professional Education, with math and language arts endorsements. New to the middle/high school is math teacher, William Draper. Mr. Draper is a 2001 graduate Eastern Michigan University where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Secondary Teaching with a major in mathematics. In 2011, Mr. Draper earned his Master’s Degree in Math Education at Wayne State University. He has 13 years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching some middle school math courses at Marcellus Middle/High School, Mr. Draper will also teach pre-calculus and calculus to high school students. Both Pre-Calculus and Calculus courses include the option for college credit. Kimberly Hayward has been hired to fill the school guidance counselor position at the middle/ high school. Mrs. Hayward has a Master of Arts Degree in Professional/School Counseling from Central Michigan University. Mrs. Hayward has been meeting with students and parents and has been busy addressing class schedule changes for the past few weeks. The Marcellus Middle/ High School Open House is scheduled for September 9 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Parents are encouraged to participate, meet their childs teachers and hear about curriculum and specific course requirements. As the school year begins, it is important to review some important notices. One such annual notice relates to student immunization. State law requires that any student enrolling in a Michigan school must show proof of immunization against the following diseases or a statement signed by a parent or guardian to the effect there is a religious or other objection to the immunization: DPT must have 4 doses with a booster every 10 years from the last vaccine; Opv (oral polio)- must have 3 doses; MMR - must have 2 doses; Hepatitis B- must have 3 doses; Varicella or present documented immunity from a reliable source - applies to all new school entrants including kindergarten. Another another notice relates to student images. Parents and guardians may wish to prevent the school from using photos, audio/video recordings, in which their child(ren) appear, for publication purposes such as educational publications, newspapers, and/or television programming. Parents and guardians who do NOT want their childs photo to be used must notify the Principal or Superintendents office. Other annual notices can be found on our district website and include Equal Educational Opportunity, Notice of Nondiscrimination, Disability/504 Accommodations, Homeless Children, Educational Records, and Integrated Pest Management Program. Parents and guardians are encouraged to return annual registration paperwork promptly. Applications for free/reduced lunch and breakfast are included in the registration packets and are available on our website and in the schools offices. The 2014-15 school year promises to be an exciting time for our school, students and community. Parents and community members can stay up to date on the good things happening in Marcellus by being involved in our school program, visiting our school and athletics Facebook page and by visiting our website at marcelluscs.org.
