FROM THE NEWSROOM: A Plainfield motorcyclist was seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a backhoe in 2009 has received a $1.3 million settlement. The Day of New London reports that Michael Fournier, of Plainfield, who was transported by Life Star Helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital following the accident on Route 14A in Plainfield in December of 2009 and has undergone several surgeries, settled with Lyme resident Timothy Mellon, who was driving the backhoe and was accused of being at fault for the accident in civil court. Fourniers attorney Kelly Reardon said the now 53-year-old was left with permanent impairments to his neck, knee and head that left him unable to work. A September 2013 trial date was was postponed, with attorneys for the two sides reaching an agreement earlier this month. Mellon is an heir to the Mellon banking fortune and a business owner.
