FROM THE NEWSROOM: A proposal to create a secondary gravel road in Canterbury may alleviate, or even resolve, an issue with gravel truck travel on Wauregan Road that led to several lawsuits that were settled earlier this year. As reported, the towns Planning and Zoning Commission approved a settlement agreement concerning multiple lawsuits related to gravel truck traffic on Wauregan Road in April. As part of that settlement, First Selectman Roy Piper says LaFramboise Sand & Stone and Rawson Materials have proposed building a temporary road across state-owned land. If approved by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the southerly haul road would take “the vast majority of heavy truck traffic” off of Wauregan Road; bypassing it almost entirely, before connecting with Maynard Road in Brooklyn, according to Piper. Other conditions of the settlement included modest financial compensation to the town for legal expenses, Piper said. The First Selectman says that, if the southerly gravel road is approved by DEEP, he expects the agreement to satisfy the vast majority of residents in the Wauregan Road are. The property owners nearest the crossing where gravel trucks would still travel frequently could be compensated as well. DEEPs decision is expected to be returned by September or October. A request for comment from the attorney representing the gravel hauling companies was not immediately returned. Tune in for the full report.
