FROM THE NEWSROOM: Concerns surrounding alleged privacy violations have surfaced among some local officials – Republican candidate for the 29th District State Senate seat John French, who serves on the Windham Board of Education, told WINY he is worried that Connecticuts adoption of the Common Core and participation in the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) will lead to student data being compiled into a national data base. French said, “Theres no doubt that the common core is going to be opening up the doorway that these students are going to be put into a major data bank somewhere in this country, and that scares me.” Killingly Town Councilor Brian Gosper echoed Frenchs concerns, saying he has already pulled his school aged children out of SBAC testing; Gosper claims there are hundreds of data points from students that could be collected and shared, including behavioral and medical records, demographic and personal financial information. What also worries Gosper is a potential slippery slope, which he says could lead to a future where children become “guinea pigs” for biometric and psychometric testing, where students heart rates, blood pressure and eye movements are monitored. State Representative Mae Flexer – the Democratic candidate running against French – said the concerns raised by French and Gosper are not ones shes heard from her constituents. Tune in for the full report.
