FROM THE NEWSROOM: Following an announcement from the Governors office of a $15 million federal grant to launch the Connecticut Advanced Manufacturing Initiative (CAMI) in 13 community and state colleges throughout the state, Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) President Dr. Carlee Drummer says the funding to be distributed to the Danielson-based college will augment the money the money that was used to start up the program in recent years, serving as supplemental funding. Drummer said it remains to be seen how much QVCC will receive from that $15 million pool, but said whatever is received will help enhance the program to prepare as many workers as possible for future jobs in Northeastern Connecticut, a program shes called “wildly successful so far,” saying 85% of participators have secured a job within several weeks after completing the program. The benefits of this grant will go hand-in-hand with the recently-awarded $1.2 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) federal grant the college also was awarded this week, Drummer confirmed. This new funding will support training in manufacturing, and enhancing the curriculum, perhaps hiring additional faculty for additional courses.
