FROM THE NEWSROOM: GROTON, Conn. (AP) — A submarine named for Connecticuts capital city has received a new commanding officer at a ceremony in Groton. Navy Cmdr. Thomas Aydt was sworn in Friday at the Navys submarine base as the top officer for USS Hartford. He replaces Cmdr. Steven Wilkinson, who took command of the Los Angeles-class attack submarine in October 2011. Last July the submarine was recognized by U.S. Fleet Forces Command as the Atlantic Fleets most improved Navy vessel in 2012. The boat had been involved in a collision with an amphibious ship in 2009 that caused more than $100 million in damage to the sub and led to the dismissal of the commanding officer. The Hartford was commissioned in 1994 and is the second U.S. naval vessel named in honor of Connecticuts capital.
