FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Brooklyn, a revision of the Village Center District zoning regulations is slated to go to a public hearing in January. Land Use Administrator Jana Roberson says that the regulations have been completely rewritten. “The purpose of that is to make the process of approvals clearer, and also to make sure that the scale of permitting needed matches the scale of the project,” says Roberson. She says that the current regulations for the Village Center District make no distinction in procedure based on the size of the building or use change. Roberson says that the regulations for that historic portion of the town have been rewritten, in part because property owners were discouraged from making minor improvements, because the rules required the same public hearing process as a major project, no matter how small the change. Roberson says Planning and Zoning officials have altered the current draft to streamline the process, including allowing smaller projects to gain approval by staff in some cases, rather than the commission at large. She says that the design standards in the district are also more defined in the new draft, citing the need to preserve the historic setting of the Village Center in Brooklyn. The proposed changes have taken years to craft, according to Roberson. The draft proposal will go before citizens in a public hearing on January 7. Tune in for the full report.
