FROM THE NEWSROOM: In light of the announcement that the River Mill Village in Thompson is receiving $3.7 million in funding to rehabilitate its 53 housing units, WINY followed up with Darien Crimmin, Vice President of Energy at the Boston-based Winn companies, which owns the housing development. Crimmin says the award will significantly improve quality of life for River Mill residents, including through kitchen and bathroom upgrades, roof replacements, and, what Crimmin considers the most important item, upgrading the oil heating systems with high performance equipment. One advantage to the new heating system will be centralized heat, so the landlord will begin paying for heat at all the properties – another advantage will be that residents will no longer need to wait as long for hot showers, with new hot water tanks to be installed in the basements. According to Crimmin, this state funding is especially beneficial to the River Mill facilities, noting the unique situation of the property, with multiple separate housing buildings that make upgrades more expensive and challenging than single-building housing developments. With the owner required to fund a reserves to pay for future capital needs of the project, Crimmin says the possibility of Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) incentivizing the boiler equipment is being explored. Residential rent is not expected to be impacted in any way by the project, which is expected to get underway in early 2015. Tune in for the fill report.
