FROM THE NEWSROOM: Killinglys budget proposal for the 2014-15 year is being put to a town-wide machine vote today. Polls will be open until 8 p.m. Voters last week approved moving forward the $54.9 million combined spending plan. The $14.3 million general government budget includes two additional resident state troopers, at a cost of about $300,000 annually. Town Council members and the Killingly Business Association have been advocating for the additional troopers for several years, citing a high crime rate and woefully low police presence in the Downtown Danielson area, as well as in farther flung, rural villages outside of the commercial district. The education spending plan is proposed at just under $40.6 million. Residents can vote at all of the regular polling locations; Districts 2 and 4 will vote at the new Killingly High School. If approved, the towns mil rate is expected to increase by 2.5 mils. Donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items will be accepted at the polls for local food banks .
