FROM THE NEWSROOM: Questions about the Putnam Police Departments acquisition of military surplus equipment has prompted the towns Police Chief to release a complete list of the items, as well as specifics about the vehicles included in the transfer, which he says are entirely for the purpose of preparedness during natural disasters and other emergencies. Hayes notes that the three vehicles are light-duty Humvees, which he describes as unarmored utility vehicles with fiberglass doors and removable tops. Each has less than 4,000 miles and are valued at $58,000 – though the Putnam Special Services District incurred no cost for the trucks. They will be stored at the Putnam Police Department, and Putnam and East Putnam Fire Departments, and have 24 inches of ground clearance that will allow police and fire personnel to respond in the most severe weather conditions. The department was also the recipient of four trailer mounted diesel generators, for use at town buildings and waste water facilities during power outages. Each are valued at about $40,000, according to Hayes. Additionally, an 18 foot aluminum boat and trailer worth $15,000, a four wheel drive cargo truck and a “five ton wrecker” will come to the town from military surplus. The wrecker can be used to transport large trucks and school buses that break down, and is valued at $168,000. Hayes says that anyone with questions about the equipment is welcome to contact him at the Putnam Police Department at 860-925-6565. Tune in for the full report.
