FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Pomfret Rod and Gun Club, in conjunction with the Wounded Warrior Project, held what is planned to be the first of an annual program where veterans can enjoy a free day of hunting, target shooting, fishing, and food as a way for club members to show them gratitude for their sacrifice in service of their country. The event was free to both veterans and their guests, which could include family and caregivers. While the contribution of the servicemen and women is no doubt crucial, club member and coordinator of the event Michael Kelly said it was also important to thank those behind the scenes. James OLeary, Outreach Specialist from the Wounded Warrior project and a recipient of a Purple Heart, was contacted by Kelly about the event and said that when he sent out the email, other veterans “jumped all over it.” Drew Schaffer, an army veteran and currently serving member of the Navy, heard about the event through the Wounded Warrior Project in New York. He enjoyed the event as a way to bond with fellow servicemen over their tours, and said that to his surprise many of them had served in the same bases overseas. Schaffer was also excited about the event because it was a chance to try new things, such as target shooting and pheasant hunting. The program brought people together of all ages and areas of the military, something “life member” at the club and Vietnam veteran B.J. Cassio said was amazing. He calls the event something very near and dear to his heart, and that the club appreciates “each and everything that every one of them has done.” With 41 veterans coming from all over the country to an event that was put together over the course of several weeks, Kelly says he is very happy with the turnout, and looks forward to future events that will have a bit more planning time behind them. Tune in for the full report.
