FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Thompson Board of Finance met Thursday, deciding that the time has come to set up a special public meeting in order to inform town residents of recent developments in the Marianapolis Sewer Project. As reported earlier this week, bids for the project came in high, with the lowest bid being $1.86 million—which excludes surveying and engineering costs, among other things. Now, town officials have signed a letter of intent to receive a $500,000 increase in grant money offered by the USDA—but before accepting the grant offer, the new information has to be presented to Thompson residents. The public information meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22nd at a location that has yet to be determined. Board of Finance Chairman Raymond Faucher Jr. advises those who are interested in attending to check for the location update on the town website in the coming days. Following the public hearing, the Board of Selectmen plans to meet and set up a town meeting so that residents can vote on whether or not to accept the extra grant money, which would have no effect on taxes. Thompson is eligible for the extra USDA funding due to the Thompson Hill region being under a current DEP Consent Order, which mandates by law that the sewage lines there need to be restored. The grant money is necessary to complete the project—which had originally been expected to cost $1.9 million—because the additional $500,000 will be added to the $1.86 million lowest-bid contract, and will cover costs outside of the physical labor aspects of the job. Tune in for the full report.
