FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Witnesses say that a child who was struck by a vehicle in Putnam last night was walking in a crosswalk at the time the accident occurred, though Putnam Police have not confirmed that information, saying the investigation is ongoing. As reported, an 8-year-old girl was struck by a car in Putnam just after 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening, according police. The accident occurred on Providence Street near the intersection of Marshall Street. Police have not said to what extent the girl was injured, other than to confirm she has been hospitalized at UMass in Worcester, and is expected to survive the accident. Authorities have not released the childs name at this time. According to police, the girl, who was believed to have been in the company of another child, was crossing the road when she was struck by a vehicle operated by 25-year-old Robyn Webster, of Putnam. The State Police Car Accident Reconstruction unit was called in to assist the Putnam Police Department with documentation of the accident scene last night. No arrests have been made at this time related to the incident; police say the the accident remains under investigation.
