FROM THE OFFICE OF DISTRICT ATTORNEY STAN GARNETT, ALERT – CREDIT CARD BREACHES We have all heard about the credit card breaches at Target and Home Depot. But did you know that Chick Fil-A, Albertsons, PF Chang, Sally Beauty Supply, Michaels, Sony, Microsoft, Dairy Queen, The UPS Store, Staples, Sears and K-Mart all had payment data breaches in 2014? I have been notified of a credit card breach. What should I do? • Ask your card issuer to cancel your current card and reissue the card with a new account number. This is especially important if you have used a debit card because funds can quickly be withdrawn from your bank account without your knowledge. • Carefully monitor all your account transactions. • If your card issuer offers it, set up text or email alerts of any activity. • Make sure that your account statements arrive in your mailbox at their normal time. • If you become aware of any fraudulent transactions, immediately call your financial institution and follow up by formally disputing the transaction in writing. • Be suspicious of any email or phone call that you receive about the breach that requests personal information. Call the number listed on your credit card or statements before you return the call. I have never been notified of a breach. What should I do? • Keep an eye on your credit even if you have never been notified of a breach. • Regularly order your credit reports and examine them carefully. In Colorado you are entitled to one free credit report per year. To order your free reports, you can call the official toll-free number, (877) 322-8228 or go online to annualcreditreport. Is there anything I can do to protect myself? • Consider a credit freeze. It prevents anyone from accessing your credit file until and unless you authorize the credit bureaus to release your report. In Colorado, there is no cost to place a freeze, but there is a $10 charge to lift a freeze. If you have additional questions, please call the Community Protection Division at the Boulder County District Attorneys Office at 303-441-3700.
