FUEL SUBSIDY PROTEST: ACCUSED COMMITTED MURDER BY SHOOTING 10 ROUNDS OF AK-47 RIFLE —WITNESS THE fuel subsidy murder trial took a new turn on Wednesday, as a prosecuting witness, Inspector Olumide Alagbe, informed the Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere, that the policeman, DSP Segun Fabunmi, charged with murder of one Adedamola Daramola during the fuel subsidy protest, shot 10 rounds of his AK-47 rifle. Alagbe made this statement while being led in evidence by the prosecutor, Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mrs Olabisi Ogungbesan. The accused, a former Divisional Police Officer, Pen Cinema, Agege, was charged on May 5, 2013 for murder and attempted murder. At the resumed hearing, Inspector Alagbe told the court that the AK-47 rifle used by the defendant was loaded with 60 rounds when he and his team were headed Yahaya Abatan, the scene of the incident. Alagbe said he was in his office on January 9, 2012, when the Commissioner of Police informed him of the incident involving an officer, who allegedly shot a man. He stressed that the body of the deceased was retrieved, while the complaints and witnesses willing made statement. He added that after investigation was carried out, it was discovered that 10 shots were allegedly fired from the defendant’s rifle. Alagbe said the defendant was subsequently arrested and statements were voluntarily obtained from him. Another witness in the trial, ASP Tanimu Jeremiah, a ballistician with the Nigeria Police also added that a 7.62 caliber AK-47 rifle, with ID number 526309, was brought to his office for examination. ASP Jeremiah averred that the rifle, which was a lethal weapon, comprised of two magazines, having 30 rounds each. The defence counsel, Mr George Oguntade, argued during a cross examination that the ballistician investigation could not have proven the source of the rifle. Justice Olabisi Akinlade, after listening to both counsels, adjourned the matter till June 2 for continuation of trial. Fabunmi was accused of shooting to death one Adedamola Daramola and causing various degrees of injuries on Alimi Abubakar, Egbujor Samuel and Chizorba Odoh, during the fuel subsidy removal protest on January 9, 2012.
