FUNDAMENTAL #7: Develop Winning Habits Dr John Maxwell, an internationally renowned leadership guru says, “If you develop the habits of winning, you will make winning a habit”. Humans are creature of habits, we do things habitually. Good or bad habits always deliver results. If your life is a failure, it may mean bad habits are driving your life. However, if you want to succeed in your career, business, or in your personal life, you must consciously select and develop winning habits. Successful people don’t just happen to succeed, they do not just find themselves at the top by fate, NO! As observed by Robert J. Ringer, author of the book; Million Dollar Habits, “Success is a matter of understanding and religiously practicing specific, simple habits that always lead to success”. Your life today is a reflection of the dominant habits that are controlling you. You are either a prisoner of bad habits or a free person led by good habits. Your habits, whether good or bad will always determine your outcomes in life, be it failure or success. One of the challenges with poor habits is that the results usually don’t show up until much later in life. For example, bad habits of over eating and laziness in exercising, the effects will not show immediately. A person will be enjoying delicious chocolate bars, creamy cakes, and large scoops of ice creams. Few people will even notice that this person does not exercise at all. It will be some years later when the effects of these bad habits will show up in this person’s life. Over-weight, fatigue, heart problems and low productivity may be the early warning signs. If you desire to succeed in life, carefully take stock of the habits you have formed over the years. Make a comprehensive list of both bad and good habits operating in, and controlling your life. Look at the list of your bad habits and see how they are negatively affecting your progress and quality of life. Then resolve to drop all bad habits and replace them with good empowering habits. There is no short-cut to this process. You must face yourself in the mirror and deal ruthlessly with yourself. Common “failure habits” include procrastination, not delivering on your promises, arriving late for meeting, reporting late for work, leaving your bed unmade, chaotic living, time wasting and gossiping. These habits are deadly and will ruin your life. Job promotions will pass you by because managers can’t trust you with extra responsibilities because you are not dependable. You will lose business opportunities and customers will desert you because you don’t keep your promises. Develop winning habits that can drive your productivity and progress in life. These include good time management, respecting appointments, reporting for work on time, saving and investing money, working diligently, paying bills on time, doing regular exercises. Imagine how your life will become better and more progressive because you are driven by these winning habits. The rule is simple; if you want to succeed in life, develop winning habits. If you are controlled by winning habits, it is inevitable, you will become a winner. If you carefully follow and copy the habits of successful people, you too, will reap the results of success in your life. ACTION POINT: What is it that you want to achieve in life? What do you want to become? What new heights do you want to reach in your career, business, social or family life? Whatever it is you want to achieve, there is a set of habits that if you form and adopt into your success strategy, you will succeed and reach your goals. Never forget: Good habits or bad habits ALWAYS deliver results.
