FWIW, I actually *support* the fuel excise indexation move. I think Labor and the Greens should support it too. Its a less-regressive source of revenue and a de facto carbon tax. Howard should never have frozen it. It was part of his electoral bribery campaign that squandered so much of the profit of the mining boom. It should be extended to mining companies as well, and the base broadened, but its a policy I fundamentally support. Really shows just *how* inept this government is, then, that Hockeys attempt to sell it has horrified me as much as anything else in the past 3 months. Hes the Treasurer, and either does not grasp or pretends not to grasp the difference between relative and absolute cost. Poor people pay smaller numbers of dollars that are a larger proportion of their available number of dollars. I could explain it to a 5 year old, with appropriate visual aids. If they cant sell the stuff that is basically good policy, what hope do they have on the stuff that is inherently evil because fundamentally unfair?
