FYI: MARTIN MOMENTS: CONSTITUTIONAL CONVERSATIONS Earn Martin Moments credits TONIGHT at the Gault Recital Hall from 6:30p.m.-7:30p.m. This event is a conversation between two experts regarding an Amendment to the Tennessee State Constitution that voters will either approve or defeat on the November ballot. This Amendment would prohibit the state legislature from ever enacting a state income tax. How states raise the money to pay for state services has profound implications about social justice (who pays and is it fair?), economic development (does the state’s tax policy encourage new jobs and employers, or does it discourage them?), and governmental stability (is the tax system providing predictable and stable revenues, or is there a lot of unpredictability in the money the state will have available from year to year?). This is a great opportunity to understand how taxes are structured, how Constitutional Amendments are created, and the kinds of tradeoffs that policy makers consider when developing policy.
