FaceBook Bible Study Session 8 Bartholomew vs Nathanael Bartholomew, the Apostle, is mentioned one time in each synoptic gospel (St. Mark 3:18, St. Matthew 10:3, St. Luke 6:15) & one time in Acts (1:13), each time along with a list of other apostles. There is no other information on Bartholomew. In the Gospel According to St. John, Nathanael was introduced to Christ by Philip (St. John 1: 45 – 47). Nathanael identified Christ as the Son of God (St. John. 1: 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig-tree before Philip called you.” 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”). Thus, Nathanael became a disciple. Nathanael from Cana in Galilee is mentioned in John 21, the “Epilogue” that was tagged onto the text around 200 CE. [St. John 21: 2 ….Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.] My question is this – Why do so many church publications claim that Bartholomew, the Apostle, is the same person as Nathanael, the Johannine disciple. I have read every verse that mentions Bartholomew and Nathanael, but I do not see the connection. Comments ?
