Facebook has more than 1.3 billion users. Its a popular website for social networking, but apparently its being used for much more. The National Security Agency has been under fire for some of its spy tactics and the latest report about the agency has a lot of people talking. According to new documents leaked by former security contractor Edward Snowden, the NSA has been pretending to be Facebook in an effort to monitor the computers of people under watch. The security agency reportedly posed as Facebook and used a technique to trick peoples computers into sending info to NSA web servers. The technique used it referred to as a man on the inside attack. When someone goes to download a page they could actually be downloading something similar to a virus as well. Then the software takes information from the persons computer and sends it to the U.S. government. Facebook representatives are saying theres no evidence of the NSA using the tactic on its users. Many people share what theyre doing with people on the web which is why media experts believe the NSA might have wanted to tap into arguably the most popular site online. Dr. Nick Bowman is a communication studies professor at WVU. He said, Its this notion of taking everyday activity, drawing patterns between those activities, and looking for individuals who are anonymous that might match the profile of somebody who is dangerous. Some people are saying the tactics detailed arent concerning, but many others say it makes them feel uncomfortable. It scares me because you cant really trust anybody. It makes me feel kind of vulnerable, said Marion County resident Allison Clayton. Ryan McCulley lives in Harrison County. He said, Its pretty concerning to certain people who use Facebook more often than I do, but it could be scary in a lot of ways even for people who dont use Facebook too much. According to a recent report, the program was apparently tested on dozens of targets before it was used more commonly beginning in 2010.
