Fact of the Day #272: The American Lion (not Andrew Jackson) is the largest subspecies of lion that we know about. They were up to eight feet long, four feet tall at the shoulder, and weighed up to seven hundred seventy-four pounds. There are relatively few fossils found in places where there are a lot more of other kinds of predators, suggesting they were smart enough to avoid such hazards. Their bones have been found in trash heaps of ancient American Natives suggesting they were hunted.
