Factitious Disorder, previously known as Munchausen Syndrome, is the invention of symptoms (mild or severe) in order to receive medical treatment. The individual creates symptoms through faking or self-injury, and they are aware of their actions but might not know the cause of their behavior. People suffering from this disorder go through great lengths to cover up their deception, sometimes falsifying tests in order to appear sicker or going through with life-threatening surgery. Some signs of this disorder include frequent hospitalization, conditions that get worse without explanation, eagerness to frequent testing or risky operations, having few visitors with reluctance of letting health care providers talk with friends or family, or frequent requests of medication, especially pain killers.
