Fair Weather This is LA County Fair time. Every year Richard and I look forward to going. We enjoy it so much that we often go three or four times in the season. Some years I have projects in the art division, which makes it even more exciting to go and see if I took any ribbons. In the past I have won a few, even one project was sent to the State Fair and won 1st prize. This year I entered two canvases. Richard and I waited with baited breath for opening day to come. Not only would we get the first day discount ($1.00) but we could check and see if I won anything. The fair opened on August 30th, it is now September 10th and we still have not gone. Why, you may ask, because it has been so hot and humid that I actually can’t stand the thought of being out there rubbing against other slippery bodies. The fair weather is always hot, so what’s the problem? Is it hotter than normal or is age catching up with me? I like to think that it is a form or wisdom but deep down in my gut, I am asking, “Is it the heat and the humidity or is it that dreaded age thing?” I real-lee try to maintain an eager and youthful attitude, I think it is important not to let yourself fall into that “It’s too much for me syndrome.” Think old get old is my motto. But darn, I just can’t bring myself to venture out in 105 plus degree’s to see my projects on display or eat a Fried Snickers bar or Chicken Fried Zucchini. Elevated temperatures or not, how have I been able to resist the display buildings with all those wonderful new gadgets, choppers, hats, jewelry! What’s the matter with me? Have I totally lost it? As I think about last years key buys, a tortilla warmer and a vegetable peeler that will peel the skin off your finger in seconds if you lose concentration, I start to yearn for the good old Fair. The call of the squealing pig races, holding the teats of a cow in my hands and the feel of milk squirting forth, add to that P-Nuttles, a strong allure, in fact too strong to deny. I just got off the phone with my sister-in-law and we made a date to go on the 13th, hell or high water. I feel a calm come over me, an ancient yearning fed. I am woman, I am strong and I am going to sweat my butt off but… I AM GOING. A ribbon, who knows… but cute little goats and Funnel Cakes, here I come! Sincerely, Real-Lee? Do you go to your County Fair? If not…how come?
