Falcon There are many species of falcons. They are related to hawks and eagles. Falcons have long, sharp-pointed wings giving them the capability of swift flight. They occur around the world; in North America they have such names as duck hawk, the pigeon hawk, and the sparrow hawk. In old European falconry terms, the duck hawk would be called peregrine, the pigeon hawk the Merlin and the sparrow hawk the kestrel. They are courageous and fierce for their small size. As a bird of prey, the falcon feeds on much the same diet as the eagle. They have extremely sharp eyesight and can dive at 180 miles per hour. Peregrine falcons are found in all parts of the world. In European folklore, the falcon is credited with the power of healing. The falcon or hawk in Egyptian myth represents the god Horus and is called the King of Birds, instead of the eagle. Horus if often shown as falcon-headed, with his eyes representing the Sun and the Moon. This bird is also connected with Ra and Menthu. The Greek goddess Circe, whose name means she-falcon, had the falcon as one of her emblems. She was often called the death-bird (kirkos, or falcon). The name of her island is Aeaea, or Wailing, the same name applied to falcons. Released at a funeral, the falcon symbolized the souls release from the earthly plane. The falcon was also connected with magick and the shamanic ability astral travel, as seen in the stories of Freyjas falcon-skin cape. Although other Norse deities borrowed this cape, the Goddess owned it. In some stories, Odhinn traveled about the Earth in a falcon-form. Magickal Attributes: Magick, astral travel, releasing the soul of a dying person. Sending energy and soul-healing to a dying person for an easy transition. Chant: High-flying falcon, bird of the Mother, Creature of Horus, the sharp-sighted one, Heal mind and body, emotions and spirit, Pour out a healing when this spell is done.
