Farmers and fellow food folks, did you know the AWA seal is being undermined? We need your help to convince USDA that all animal handling claims should have meaning behind them. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has submitted a petition to USDA asking them to only approve animal welfare and environmental stewardship label claims if certified by a third party. Right now USDA approves these claims based solely on minimum industry standards, which is misleading to consumers and unfair to farmers deserving recognition for their higher welfare standards. If this petition is granted it will mean producers could not use high welfare or sustainable label claims without being third-party certified for a standard above the conventional industry. It would also mean markets would not be inundated with misleading humanely raised claims undeserving of the claim and increased price tag. animalwelfareapproved.org/label-action-alert/
