Fashion-designer Iris van Herpen has won the prestigious Dutch Design Award 2013 with her collection ‘Voltage’, which was created using 3D printer. The 29-year-old designer won not only the sub-category ‘Fashion’, but also the coveted ‘Golden Eye’ prize covering all categories. The jury were of the opinion that she had given a new meaning to the word ‘fashion’ due to her multi-disciplinary approach and showed the world the current state-of-the-art in the Netherlands. Van Herpen’s Voltage collection was inspired by lightning: as a child she was inspired by the fire that shot earthwards out of the sky. She collaborated with architect Philip Beesley, MIT researcher NeriOxman and 3D printing company Stratasys. An intricate dress made by selective laser sintering was designed with Austrian architect Julia Koerner and printed by Belgian company Materialise. Lady Gaga is a noted wearer of Van Herpen’s creations. Read more: irisvanherpen/
