*Fate* He sighed as his flight touched down in “her” city. This was the first time he had agreed with his companys choice for his posting. Her city. Years had passed. He wondered if she would ever forgive him for all the years of absence. They used to sit on the roof watching the sunset. He would always tell her that one day he would be a self made man. And she would sit there with her head on his shoulder and smile indulgently; almost like a mother patiently listening to her childs stories about the boogie monster. He remembered he had an exclusive platinum American Express card in his wallet now. Self made man indeed. On his way to her house he stopped at the nearby supermarket. She had always liked roses. He picked up the biggest bunch they had and smiled thinking of her reaction. He remembered the times when he would use his weekly pocket money to buy her just one rose stem. When he reached his car he decided the bouquet needed a card as well. He was about to enter the shop again when he saw ‘her’ through the glass door talking to the cashier. She still took his breath away. Her hair fell across her face when she laughed, just the way he remembered it. And she would always brush it back with her left hand and- His expression tightened as he saw her left hand. Or rather what she had on her fourth finger. As she finished paying her bill and exited the store she saw a bouquet of roses lying on the ground near the entrance. What a waste, she mused. Two hours later a plane took off from her city. One of the last minute passengers on the flight was a young man. A co-passenger drifting off to sleep drowsily noted that he vaguely smelt of roses. Later that night she sighed as she looked at her left hand. They would have to visit the jewellers shop tomorrow. She regretted having ever tried on her mothers ring earlier that morning. The damn thing was too small for her finger and refused to come off. -Achyut Gupta #TAWfanarchy
