Fatima al-Fihri was a Moroccan lady who lived during the 9th Century CE. She and her sister Maryam decided on using the funds from their fathers inheritance for good and charitable causes. Maryam set up the al-Andalus Mosque in Fez, Morocco and Fatima, she set up the University, Al-Qayrawayyin in 859. Till today, the university is still up and running and according to both the Guinnes Book of World Records and UNESCO it is the oldest university that is still up and running today. Among many famous students at the University, there was the historian Ibn Khaldun, the most famous Jewish theologian and scientist, Ibn Mamum (commonly known as Maimonedes), and Gerbert dAurillac, who was to become Pope Sylvester II.
