Fayose, others absent at pro-Jonathan rally Ekiti State governor-elect, Peter Ayodele Fayose, and some of the ministers from the South West geo-political zone, were conspicuously absent at the rally of Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (former Liberty Stadium), Oke-Ado, Ibadan on Saturday. However, no reason was given for the absence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains at the rally where it was disclosed that over 1,800,000 people had appended their signatures, asking President Goodluck Jonathan to run again for the 2015 Presidency. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, who received the collection of booklets from the Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa, commended the people of the zone for the love and support expressed to Mr. President. He said the signatures compilation for Jonathan’s return for second term, “is an ongoing exercise and similar rallies would be held in all the geo-political zones of the country before the presentation of the overall documents in Abuja next month”. Before presenting the booklets to the SGF, Arogbofa described the South West zone as a home to Mr. President, recalling that the zone was the first to adopt him ahead of the 2011 election and urged him not to ignore the call, which he said was a demonstration of love and loyalty to the President. He called on the people of the zone to join hands to give PDP resounding victory during the 2015 elections holding in February, noting that Jonathan had proved himself a performing and transforming public servant since his election in 2011. According to him, “I want to call on my people to let us work with unity of purpose and I can assure all of us that if we work together, the reward will be superlative. “We worked for Mr. President in 2011 and we all can see that there’s no regrets and this time around, we will not regret but have more and better reward”. Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Olajumoke Akinjide, in her remark, was emphatic in declaring the support of the zone for Jonathan, stressing that anybody saying anything contrary was only deceiving himself of herself. She said the people of the zone would vote massively for Jonathan come 2015 in order for the zone to have more dividends of democracy, with a pledge that all hands would be on deck to ensure victory for the party in all other elections in the zone. Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, said those ganging up against Jonathan’s re- election were working against God, stressing that it was God that raised the President up for this moment in the political history of the country. He asked: “As a zone, what did we benefit from the Federal Government in the whole of eight years when we had our own person there? “The Lagos/Ibadan expressway that is wearing a new look was there when our own son was there, among other laudable things the President is doing for our zone. “All those rising against him had benefitted from the PDP at one time or the other and since it had not been possible in history for any individual or group of persons to rise against God and defeat God, they would also fail”, he added. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Kingsley Kuku, charged the youths in particular to seize the opportunity of having somebody that believes in them to work for the betterment of their future. He charged the people of the zone to ensure full participation in the on-going voter registration, to be able to exercise their franchise at the appropriate time, stressing that the importance of voter card in electoral contest cannot be over-emphasised.
