Federal Partners – highlight of NERRs and NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR) were established by Congress in 1972 as part of the Coastal Zone Management Act, the NERRs are partnerships between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and coastal states. The South Slough Reserve was designated in 1974 as the first unit of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), a network of 28 estuarine habitats protected and managed for the purposes of long-term research, education and coastal stewardship. The South Slough works in a close partnership with NOAA on all its programs. The State of Oregon provides some funding, Land ownership/management, in this case the Department of State Lands, Staff and program implementation. NOAA provides some funding and national coordination with all the 28 Reserves and technical assistance. Day 7 Letter: I #SouthSlough40
