Federal Tax Phone Scam: [Warning] The daughter of one of my co-workers got a call on her pre-paid cell phone and the number showed up unavailable. My co-worker noticed that her daughter was getting upset and had to have the person keep repeating things on the phone. When her daughter got off the phone her daughter said that the womans accent was so thick she couldnt understand everything the woman was saying. The woman said her name was Amanda Price and she was from the Tulsa Sheriffs Office and there was a Warrant out for her Daughters arrest for Federal Taxes due. The woman then gave her Daughter a number in Washington D.C. and told her she must call and talk with the Criminal Tax Enforcement Division of the IRS. Her Daughter is 25 years old and when she got off the phone she was freaking out about it. My co-worker was with the IRS for 21 years and IRS Criminal Investigation for 11 of those 21 years. My co-worker told her Daughter there were several things that gave it away as a scam immediately. First, the woman said Tulsa Sheriffs Office, not Tulsa County Sheriffs Office, the second thing was her Daughter had not received any correspondence prior to this from the IRS and her Daughter and her daughters Husband get a refund every year. Things my co-worker knew from being with the IRS are…the IRS does not warn you if they have a Warrant for your arrest (at least not under normal circumstances) and usually any amount a regular taxpayer like her Daughter and her daughters Husband might owe would not get the attention of IRS Criminal Investigation unless there were extenuating circumstances. My co-worker made the call for her Daughter, (it did have a 202 area code and it did show Washington D.C. on the caller I.D.). A man answered “This is Agent Austin Reed, Criminal Tax Enforcement Division”. I knew unless something had changed in the last two years there is no such Division. He also had such a thick accent my co-worker said that she could only understand about every other word he said. One of the first questions he asked her was how did she want to pay for this - credit or debit card? Then she asked him several questions he could not answer, so he hung up on her. She called the Sheriffs Office and IRS CI and explained what had happened. There is a scam and phishing sight on the IRS Government website (irs.gov) where anything involving someone misrepresenting themselves as any type of Agent or Officer for the IRS, anyone trying to collect any Federal taxes over the phone or that might not be legitimate can be turned in. Im just worried about how many people might actually give these people a credit or debit card number. *******DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION***********
