Federal prosecutors to seek death penalty for accused LAX shooter Paul Ciancia Federal prosecutors announced Friday they will seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing a Transportation Security Administration officer during a shooting rampage at Los Angeles International Airport. The decision was released in documents filed in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles. Paul Anthony Ciancia, 24, who faces 11 felony counts related to the Nov. 1, 2013, shooting, is scheduled to appear Monday for a status conference before Judge Philip Gutierrez, who might set a trial date, prosecutors said. •Document: Request to seek death penalty for Paul Ciancia “Defendant Paul Anthony Ciancia committed the offense after substantial planning and premeditation to cause the death of a person,” prosecutors wrote in their six-page document outlining the reasons for seeking the death penalty. The decision was left to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, but the affidavit is signed by acting U.S. Attorney Stephanie Yonekura and four other prosecutors from the Los Angeles office. The lead federal public defender handling the case was not immediately available for comment. Ciancia is charged with killing TSA Officer Gerardo Hernandez as he worked a security station in Terminal 3.
