Felicidades! You are the proud neighbor to a critically endangered ecosystem. The Pine Rocklands. A fragile and intricate ecosystem boasting the highest biodiversity of grasses in America! This forest is built on a fossilized Pliocene reef thats shells and coral can easily be observed when walking across with the naked eye! However even with only 2% of the ecosystem left,and point .6% inside of Miami-Dade County there is almost no efforts to maintain these forests and protect them from non natives, or being overgrown. See the Pineland is dependent on fires for extra micro nutrients due to the fact it grows in an alkaline fossilized reef, it has evolved to create and survive from fire. This has created a liability problem for the county so this poor fragmented ecosystem has been isolated into small pockets that are just building up pine needles ready to ignite. I personally feel as a neighbor to the pinelands myself that its a greater danger to me that the county neglect this ecosystem than carefully and ritually orchestrate safe, controlled, prescribed burns for everyones safety and a healthier ecological future for us all.
