Female Pileated Woodpecker. A few years ago, we were thrilled to watch mom and dad Pileated woodpecker bring their two fledglings to the yard to show them the water and suet. This year, we have another pair, and the female is not as shy as we would expect, leading us to believe that she is one that was raised in our yard. She startled me this PM when she flew to the feeder beside me (as in within 4 feet away). They are usually quite shy, but she knew I was there and was just famished, so didnt care apparently. I had only a macro lens to snap a shot, then backed away quietly to allow her to feed. I suspect she has a brood somewhere and is taking advantage of the readily available food/water in the yard.
