Fergus C. Lane Nuremore Golf The three players at the top of the leader-board this weekend have more experience between them than many a football squad. With a combined age of over 180 years they could write the book on roguery and never leave out a trick. Usually tops in the experience lark is Frank Fidgeon who has forgotten more ways to win than others thought possible. Frank scored an excellent 39 points on Saturday but since Sunday’s play was reduced to 16 holes he was outfoxed by the wiliest of all, Joe Liffey. Frank had six points deducted from his score as he had two pars on the 7th and 8th. Joe on the other hand knew that there were only 16 holes in play and so, despite a catastrophic start where he did not score because he inadvertently played the wrong ball and was reminded of his folly by that player, he put his misery behind him and cantered forward at full stride. From there he stormed to 34 points for the remaining 15 holes and collected his first win for a long time. Considering that he was once tipped to reach single figures and spends more time honing his craft than many another it was no big surprise to see him atop the leader-board at last. Frank Fidgeon , as I already mentioned, is probably the craftiest golfer ever produced by Shercock and in it’s day it produced many a crafty one. Unfortunately for him he had to lose those 6 points or he would definitely have brought home the bacon. The player in third position, Brian Busby has had a really fantastic year of it. The computer, which seems to know more than it’s prayers, recommended that Brian lose a shot at the start of the year before a ball was struck in anger. Being the excellent sportsman that he is Brian did not demur in the slightest and soon had three more shots taken off through his own excellence. Such is the true spirit of the game unlike those begrudgers who would scale hell and high waters just to keep what they perceive to be a ‘healthy’ handicap. This year’s Captains’ Dinner is on the 30th of November and promises to be a night to remember. In bygone days one would nearly have to have a sick note to miss out on this wonderful occasion and Cathal O’Gorman and Ena Gilsenan are doing their level best to restore it to it’s position of pride on the calendar. Just let either know of your intention to attend or if by some strange occurrence you are already booked for that night have the decency at least to let them know you cannot be there!
