Fibrotic Myopathy Fibrotic myopathy is a unilateral gait - TopicsExpress

Fibrotic Myopathy Fibrotic myopathy is a unilateral gait deficit where the the cranial phase of the stride is suddenly stopped and the foot is slapped back to the ground in a rapid motion. This disorder is traumatic in origin to the semitendinosus muscle. It may be a chronic repetitive micotrauma or a sudden single traumatic event. The latter may occur when a foot is caught in a halter, fence, or lead shank; lacerations; sliding. The former may be represented by microtrauma that occurs in reining or barrel racing. It may even occur due to sitting hard on the butt bar in trailer. Diagnosis is by clinical examination. The scarred or ossified area may be palpated, in addition to gait evaluation, which is caused by a mechanical restriction and is not painful. Treatment is by surgical semitentinosus tenotomy. The tendon is resected near its attachment to the medial caudal tibia. Second Chance Equine Association scearescue
