Fifty-one years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his I Have a Dream speech in Washington, D.C. While we have made many advancements, there is still more that needs to be accomplished. For example: the current treatment of residents in the Burton Station area of Virginia Beach regarding City services. To this day the residents of Burton Station do not have City water or sewer service and yet they receive a water bill, this is unacceptable. In Virginia Beach there is no place to raise your grievances concerning discrimination. The City Council refers you to the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission which has denied there are any such racial issues in the City of Virginia Beach. How about inequality in housing? inequality in education? occasional riots? and the differences of opinion on property and Civil Rights with the City? I am proposing the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission have a standing committee on race relations, so there is a proper forum where concerns and complaints can be heard and addressed.
