Film Festival Report: Movie #1, Last Call (Tercera Llamada) A comedy from Mexico; its subtitled, but I couldnt find a trailer with subtitles, so this is the best I can do. The main character, Isa, is directing a play; Caligula, by Camus. At the beginning of the movie, four weeks before opening night, she decides that theyre approaching the play the wrong way; she scraps the set and costume designs. This sets off a wave of conniptions among the cast and crew (and producer). Those havent settled down yet before Isa fires the lead actor and has to go searching for a replacement. If youre familiar with standard movie plotting, you can already guess two things: 1) the situation will steadily deteriorate, until a disastrous blow-up near the end. 2) the characters will then suddenly get it together at the last minute. I might describe this as an uncomfortable ensemble comedy. The characters are industriously making themselves and each other miserable; the results are sometimes uproariously funny, sometimes unpleasant to watch. The burst-out-laughing moments become more frequent as the movie goes along, though. The movie does an excellent job of setting up its jokes, too. In one early scene, for instance, the production assistant chats idly about rumors that the theatre is haunted. This subject is not referred to again for most of the movie. Then, suddenly, you find out what this ghost actually is, and LOL. Overall, an enjoyable movie. Not quite a must-see. Unless youre a theatre person. If you are, youll probably love this. https://m.youtube/watch?v=8kNokiSIiNc
