Films In Pants 10: Cinema Special: Gravity in 4DX Definitely - TopicsExpress

Films In Pants 10: Cinema Special: Gravity in 4DX Definitely the best disaster movie ever released. Beautifully shot and wonderfully claustrophobic as far as the effects of being in space are concerned. The initial 20 minutes were excellent at setting the scene and showing -- not telling -- the pitfalls of space, viz. nobody can hear you scream, etc etc. Sandra Bullock was great throughout although I thought maybe a little bit much on the hyperventilation front. The film wasnt a Save The Cat clone-script but the dialogue was incessantly bad, I thought -- Were going home, I love her -- I LOVE HER, I LOVE HER, the constant hook-based plot points leading to awkward callbacks right at the end of the film. Cf. the directorial flashes of brilliance such as the very end of the film when a character tries to stand up and fails and laughs as they realize why. This could again be compared with the l-inge-eerrr-inngg shot of Bullock clearly meant to be in the womb, awakening, being reborn, whatever you like; towards the end of the first act this is supposed to carry much more meaning than it actually does. The scattershot of metaphors is heavy handed and none more so than the reappearance of a major character towards the end of the second act of the film to deliver a deus ex machina that rivals the strength of the one that acts as the inciting incident. That said it was definitely worth it, the steep entrance fee justified without any of the 4DX gubbins for the cinematic experience, which isnt normally a term I would use but here is altogether justified. The 4DX chairs were great -- amazing, even. But I would have turned the effects down by about half and kept the rotating/moving chairs throughout the whole film to better give the same feeling of semi-weightlessness/not knowing where you were spatially that worked so brilliantly during the first twenty minutes of the film. I dont like being sprayed with air or water and 3D is still rubbish. Better than: Castaway As good as: Crash (either) Not as good as: Gattaca
