Find the decline of Detroit over the last 6o years fascinating. In the 50s Detroit was one of the great US cities but the writing was on the wall, and many in Chicago were determined to find some way of walling the white areas of Chicago largely off and slowing and controlling black street traffic into the key business and commercial area of loop. This was also vitally important to key American business families such as the Kennedy family which key commercial holdings were in the Chicago loop such as the Merchandise Mart. Chicago was like many American cities basically controlled and run by organised crime. Those who inconvientiently pointed this out like Senator Kevavaer and his Senate crime committe were conviniently removed as rivals of the Kennedy brothers and Joseph Kennedy with suitable photos of the Senators nightime companions. Daley walled off the better area of Chicago will motorways and to a large extent it was a succesful strategy.
