Finding reasonably accurate information isnt all that hard, yet Ive seen quite a few posts over the last few weeks touting an upturn in the economic status of the U.S., that is falsely reflected in the statistics released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing a decrease in the unemployment rate. I see memes attributing this economic growth to the president. While I am not an Obama basher, per se; I dont trust politicians in general...........Obama is a politician............enough said about that! This has less to do with Obama, so much as peoples willingness to blindly accept information, they are fed by the mainstream media. There are different statistical categories within the BLS ranging from U3 to U6, that tell vastly different stories concerning the state of unemployment in this country. U3 is the category generally released by the BLS, and it shows a rise in employment. And sets the unemployment rate at a 10 year low of 5.8%. What most people dont understand, is that this category includes a vast portion of the population that is either unemployed, yet actively seeking work, or marginally employed, and yet CLASSIFIED as employed. Within the same BLS website there exists 3 more categories that increasingly show a more accurate statistical view of unemployment. Category U6 shows the true story Unemployment has been on a fairly steady, overall increase over the last 10 years, and depending on whose interpretation of this information you chose to go by, the actual unemployment rate is between 12.5-nearly 20%. A far cry from the 5.8 being touted by the government. Yes Virginia, there is propaganda in this country.
