Finished! Great afternoon - Paint a little... pet Echo a little, repeat, lol. Sorry for the terrible pictures; my smart phone is only so smart, ha. I decided to do James Dean not only because hes just an incredible icon, but Im in Indiana, and hes from here so it seemed like the perfect time to work on it - breathing the same air and walking in the same places where he walked and lived. Someone asked me how I can do a painting like this where I cant feel their face. I posted my response below just in case you were interested. Have a great Day!! :) How I painted this: It is actually a new technique that I started about a year and a half a go in conjunction with the work that Im doing to make the artwork in museums more accessible for people with visual impairments. The idea was to make all the paintings at a museum accessible, but the idea began because I wanted to do a painting of my grandfather who passed away when I was 7; I have a childs perspective of what he looked like - so to really know what he looked like in detail Id have to work from a photograph. I havent seen a photograph clearly in 16 years or at all since 2001 so it seemed impossible, but thats where modern technology comes in. We can actually take a photo and print it out in a raised line format so instead of just seeing the photo you can feel the lines that make it up - that way you can use your fingers to understand the composition. Then using a screen reader (NVDA) you can go over a gray scale version of the photo and it will convert the color into a sound for each pixel - higher for lighter colors and lower for colors going towards black. It isnt perfect, which is why Im only using it for photos of people that I have some memory of seeing - like James Dean (Love the guy!) It is getting better though; Im actually beta testing two no programs that came out this summer which take everything even further. The next step is to use 3D printers to print out peoples faces. right now it is still very hard to understand what a photo looks like through sound and touch; it takes quite awhile, but the fact that it is possible means it will just get better and better! It is a great time to be alive! I hope that helps; sorry for the long answer!
